The Toughest Slab in a Goodyear Backyard
Pool decks in Goodyear take more abuse than any other concrete on the lot. They bake in direct sun through a stretch when average highs top 100 degrees for three months running, they are splashed with chlorinated water all season, and they catch monsoon storms that drop a lot of rain fast. A good deck has to shed that water, stay safe when wet and stay bearable under bare feet. We pour new decks, replace cracked ones, add lounge space, and resurface decks that are worn but still structurally sound.
Drainage before anything else
Water on a deck should move away from the pool, toward deck drains or the yard, so dirty runoff and grit stay out of the water. It also needs to stay clear of the house foundation and the block wall. On a new or extended deck we set the forms to a steady fall and verify it before ordering concrete. On an existing deck, ponding after a storm is the first thing we look for, because standing water stains the surface and softens the soil beneath it.
Surfaces for bare feet
- Spray texture or knockdown: a thin cement coating sprayed on, then troweled flat at the peaks; HomeGuide notes that spray texture adds grip to worn decks.
- Cool-deck coatings: HomeGuide describes this kind of coating as non-slip and able to lower surface temperature, at roughly $4 to $6 a square foot.
- Light broom texture: simple and grippy, though coarser on skin than a coated texture.
- Stamped concrete: patterned and colored, sealed with grit; HomeGuide lists stamped pool decks at $8 to $19 a square foot.
Whatever the surface, color matters a lot in July: pale tones stay cooler, while dark colors and glossy sealers soak up heat.
Working at the pool's edge
The coping, the cap along the rim of the pool, has to come through the job undamaged, and the seam between coping and deck needs a flexible sealant so each can move on its own. During demolition and pouring we keep slurry and dust out of the water and off the pool finish. Loose coping or a pool finish that needs work is pool-builder territory, and we tell you that before starting.
Warning signs on an existing deck
- Cracks that catch toes, or with one side higher
- Puddles that linger after rain or after topping off the pool
- A coating that peels, chalks or has worn too smooth to grip
- A widening gap between deck and coping
- Stains or rust marks where water does not drain
Resurfacing versus replacement
When the slab is solid and the cracks are small, resurfacing is usually the economical route. HomeGuide puts basic pool deck resurfacing at $3 to $6 a square foot and decorative resurfacing at $6 to $12. But if sections have dropped, the deck tilts toward the pool, or wide cracks show a height difference, a coating only hides the problem. Those sections need to be sawn out and poured again.
Seasonal care
Hose the deck down often to rinse off chlorine, sunscreen and dust. Keep sprinklers and roof runoff from soaking the soil at the deck edges. Check the coping seam every spring and reseal it when it cracks. Stamped or colored decks should be resealed every few years, in line with HomeGuide's advice for stamped concrete.

Pool Deck Steps
1. Assessment
We check fall, low spots, cracks and the coping seam, and decide whether resurfacing or replacement fits.
2. Protection and prep
The pool is covered and protected, failed sections are cut out, and the base is compacted and formed.
3. Concrete or coating
New concrete goes in early in the day, or a texture coat is sprayed and troweled over the existing deck.
4. Sealing and cure
Joints and the coping line are sealed, and you get a schedule for walking and furniture.

Pool Decks Questions
Which pool deck surface stays the coolest?
Light, textured cool-deck coatings are made for this; HomeGuide describes them as non-slip and able to lower surface temperature. In direct sun, any pale finish beats a dark or shiny one.
Which way should a pool deck slope?
Away from the pool, toward deck drains or the yard, so dirt and runoff stay out of the water. It should also keep water away from the house and the walls.
Can a cracked deck be resurfaced?
If the cracks are narrow and the slab is stable, yes. Cracks get filled first, then the new surface goes on. Sunken areas or wide, offset cracks should be replaced, because a coating will crack again right over them.
Does the pool need to be drained?
Not for typical deck replacement or resurfacing. We protect the water and finish during the work. Draining is a decision for a pool contractor and usually only comes up when the shell or coping is being repaired.
When can we swim and use the deck again?
Swimming is usually fine the same day if you can get in another way. Foot traffic on a new coating is often OK within a day or two, and on new concrete after a couple of days. Furniture should wait about a week; we give you the exact timing.
